Bitcoin Pizza Day is celebrated every year on 22 May by ordering pizza with bitcoin.

Bitcoin pizza day commemorates the first transaction for a good or service using bitcoin. On 22 May 2010, after 5 days of offering 10,000 BTC for “a couple of pizzas” on bitcointalk.org Laszlo Hanyecz (laszlo) finally reported a successful transaction with Jeremy Sturdivant (jercos).

“I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza. Thanks jercos!”

The transaction was significant because it proved unaffiliated individuals believed bitcoin could be used in real-world transactions as an exchange of value. At the time the transaction was valued at USD$25.
